Human emotion, framed in a picture

Hi, I’m Janelle, a creative director taking to telling stories through photography and videography in Richmond, Virginia.

I've always been drawn to the human side of things—light and shadows and all that we carry. From a young age, I knew that storytelling was what I wanted to do. I took pencil to paper, even wrote a mystery book in fourth grade based on a story I came up with in playing with dolls. Later, it evolved into making Windows Movie Maker slideshows of the best photos of my family dog, then in high school, pursuing videography. I wanted to make the movies that left something the way Big Fish, Life of Pi, and so many more did. All the while, music videos would form in my head constantly and I'd keep replaying the same songs just to be immersed in thought. After graduating from the University of Mary Washington with a double major in Creative Writing and Communication and Digital Studies, I moved to Richmond and worked at a local news station for 4 1/2 years and modeled with photographers in the DMV community. I took what I learned from both environments and began taking portraits and photographs of my own in 2021—I've been hooked ever since. In my free time and work travels as a Media Production Specialist, my cameras and an extra roll of film goes with me. I want to capture what it is to be human in a world that is ever-changing in what that definition is. To me, it is more about what is raw and visceral, what lives inside our beings, than anything else.
